World Cup Qualifiers: Uefa Previews for the Next Round

Several European teams are getting prepared for the next qualifying round which is going to be held this next weekend. Portugal and Sweden are going to play this Saturday October 11th and while Portugal recovers their all star player Cristiano Ronaldo, Sweden on the other hand, has lost almost half of their top players because of injuries.

The match is going to be held at the Rasunda Stadium, in Sweden, where the local team has only lost one game in 10 years.

Portugal, which is part of the UEFA Group 1, currently is at the 4th place of the group with three points after beating Malta 4-0. However, after that they were beaten at home by Denmark 3-2. The 3 teams in the group placed above Portugal are Denmark, Albania and Sweden, all of them with four points after two games.

“From here on in it’s going to be difficult and we can’t lose any more games like we did against Denmark,” said Ronaldo “I can assure you we’ll be looking for three points in Sweden,” he added. “I want us to play our usual game and make the Swedes defend and cause them headaches…”.

Ronaldo was a doubt since he underwent an ankle surgery after the Euro 2008. In Portugal lineup, there are some important players missing too. Deco, who plays with Chelsea, has a torn muscle and cannot play. Midfielder Maniche, winger Simao Sabrosa and central defender Ricardo Carvalho are also sidelined with injuries.

However, for Sweden the picture is even worse, Strikers Henrik Larsson and Markus Rosenberg, defender Olof Mellberg, and midfielders Christian Wilhelmsson, Tobias Linderoth and Anders Svensson are out of the team due to injuries as well.

On the other hand, for UEFA Group 5 in the qualifying round, there are a lot of concerns about injuries too for the games of this weekend. For the Spanish coach, Vicente del Bosque, the mayor concerns are Sergio Ramos and Andres Iniesta who had both leg injuries. Nevertheless, there are also some good news for the team, some of the players that were injured are now back, such as Carles Puyol, Carlos Marchena and Raul Albiol, and some others are expected to be back later.

Del Bosque is considering on making some other changes in the midfield since two of the players are sidelined. But after all, they are very confident with the work that the team has been doing since they consider that they cannot be playing better than right now and that they are targeting the most important title. Spain is facing Estonia this coming Saturday and they are planning to do their best at this game.

Xavi Hernandez also expressed that he is pleased with the team, “Without a doubt, we all feel more appreciated, more important across the world. We just needed to win something,” Xavi said. “Myself, personally, I feel better prepared, stronger.” Some other teams are getting prepared as well, since most of the second round qualification matches are going to be held during the weekend. Certainly this will be a very exciting weekend and we will be anxious to see the results.

Premiership Betting Review – 1 May 2006

Chelsea officially clinched the Premiership on Saturday lunchtime with a crushing 3-0 victory over second placed Manchester United. The Blues only needed a draw to confirm the champions status but William Gallas after five minutes, Joe Cole on 61 and Ricardo Carvalho on 73 sealed victory in style as Jose Mourinho’s side retained their Premiership trophy at 6/5.

Another crucial match in the Premiership was Portsmouth’s victory at Wigan Athletic. As predicted in the Walker’s Word column, Pompey’s win at the JJB Stadium relegated both Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion in what was a gloomy day for West Midlands football. Henri Camara gave Wigan the lead after 34 minutes, but Benjamin Mwaruwari’s first goal form the club on 63 and Matt Taylor’s second penalty in as many weeks on 71 ensured a 9/5 away win.

Birmingham City could only muster a goalless draw against Newcastle United when only victory could preserve their Premiership status until the final match of the season. The draw was available at 12/5 before kick-off.

Liverpool went level on points with Manchester United after Saturday’s 3-1 win over struggling Aston Villa. Fernando Morientes opened the scoring after four minutes but Gareth Barry levelled on 58. Captain Steven Gerrard netted on 61 and 65 minutes to ensure a 3/10 victory for Rafa Benitez’s side.

Tottenham Hotspur tightened their grip on fourth place with a 1-0 win over Bolton Wanderers. Aaron Lennon struck the decisive goal on the hour for the 7/10 Spurs.

Fulham won their first match away from Craven Cottage with a last gasp goal at Manchester City. Richard Dunne gave City the lead after 69m minutes but Collins John equalised for the Cottagers with six minutes left. Steed Malbranque then fired in a stoppage time winner to secure an unlikely victory at 3/1 odds.

Alan Curbishley’s last match at The Valley as manager of Charlton Athletic ended in defeat as they were beaten 2-0 by 8/5 Blackburn Rovers. Steven Reid broke the deadlock two minutes before the break while a Chris Powell own goal on 65 put Mark Hughes’ side in touching distance of UEFA Cup football.

On Bank Holiday Monday, Arsenal made sure Sunderland went the entire season without a home win with a 3-0 victory at the Stadium of Light. Arsenal, huge 3/10 favourites before kick-off, scored three goals in 14 first half minutes, with a Danny Collins own goal on 28, Cesc Fabregas on 38 and Thierry Henry three minutes before the break.

Manchester United edged one point ahead of Liverpool as they drew 0-0 with Middlesbrough at Old Trafford. United, heavily odds-on before kick-off, saw Ruud van Nistelrooy miss a penalty after 65 minutes and the match ended level at 9/2.

U.K. Football Top Players History And Teams

U.K. football has been around for nearly two hundred years, yet today it’s more popular than ever. Football was actually invented in Europe in late 1863 with the formation of the Football Association.
U.K. Football stars David Beckham, Kevin Phillips and Ryan Giggs
David Beckham
English national football team midfielder David Beckham has become one of the best known U.K. football players. Thirty three year old Beckham has numerous awards and accolades for his football ability. Some of these awards include winning the British Sportsman of the Year Award in 2001 from the British Sports Writers’ Association, UEFA Awards most valuable player in 1999 and PFA Young Player of the Year Award in 1997 to name a few. Going back to 1991, David signed on as a trainee for the Manchester United and today plays for Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Galaxy team. These days Beckham is known the world over not only for his contribution to U.K. football but for much more, including his acting roles.
Ryan Giggs
Born in Cardiff in 1973, Ryan Giggs has played for the Manchester United for the past eighteen years. Since beginning his career with Manchester United in 1992, Giggs has won nine Premier League winner’s medals. Ryan is also a midfielder and is widely accepted as one of the best in U.K. football history. However, in 2007 he retired completely from international football.
Kevin Phillips
Aston Villa forward Kevin Phillips started off in football as a right back. His 30 FA Premier League goals during the 1999-2000 seasons for Sunderland won him the European Golden Boot. Although he has suffered injuries and has bounced around to many teams, he is still regarded as a fan favorite amongst U.K. Football fans.
History of Premier League Football
Premier League Football also known as the Barclays Premier League began in mid 2002 to revive and recover the failing U.K. Football image. Due to many soccer stadium riots and violence that brought shame to the entire nation, new rules, regulations and systems where put in place for U.K Football. English football had been banned for several years for its violence. Racial slurs and stadiums falling apart were also issues that were addressed and fixed with the Premier League formation. Since then, the Premier League has created a brand that sports fans around the world regularly watch.

The Football League Championship (Also known as the Coca-Cola Football League Championship because Coca-Cola sponsors of the Championship and the two leagues.) is a division of the English football league system after the Premier League. It’s also one of the biggest football leagues in Europe today. Team rankings are based upon goals scored, goal difference, and points gained. Teams play against other teams for a total of two times. One home game and then another away game is then played. Recently, BBC Radio 5 Live and The Football League Championship have teamed up to provide weekly podcast featuring U.K. Football content.

European Soccer- Ronaldo Nominated for Two Player of the Year Awards

The superstar of the Manchester United and 23 years-old Cristiano Ronaldo has been nominated for the FIFA World Prize and the prestigious Ballon D’Or; awards that symbolize the Best Player of the World and the Best European Player of the Year, respectively.

There are 29 contenders for the awards but for many coaches and analysts, only three of them are the possible ones that can prevail to win the prestigious honors, and they are Lionel Messi, Fernando Torres and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The three players have won international titles this year, Torres accomplished the EURO 2008 with Spain, Messi won the Beijing Olympics with Argentina and Ronaldo achieved the England title and the UEFA Champions League title with the Manchester United. However, we have to mention that not always the player that wins the awards is someone that has accomplished national and international glory.

Last year, the winner of both prizes was the Brazilian player Kaka, even when it is not common that the same player receives the two awards. Although, Kaka had an awesome year in that occasion and he accomplished great achievements in his game and that is the case of Cristiano Ronaldo this time. Ronaldo scored 42 goals last season and he played at the top of his game; besides his team, the Manchester United, achieved the UEFA Champions League, the greatest title in Europe, and the England Championship. All of this with the undeniable contribution of Ronaldo, and given the situation, why couldn’t he be the winner of both prizes as well?

For his manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, Ronaldo deserve the two prizes and more. “Ronaldo is just an amazing player and someone who will always score for the team.  Cristiano will win both player of the year awards, I am sure of it, If he doesn’t, I want to sign the guy who does,” expressed Ferguson.

Even though the confidence Ferguson has about Ronaldo receiving the recognitions, on the other hand he has explained that he is really happy with Ronaldo’s recovering and playing time since he has already scored 4 times for the team, however, he is thinking of leaving him out his line-up against Celtic on the next game, due to the fact that he still not recovered completely of his ankle surgery and his physical form can be shown after playing two close games. For example, with his national team Portugal, he played an amazing football against Sweden which was a Saturday but then three days later, Portugal faced Albania and Ronaldo seemed to be a little tired and flat.

Therefore, Ferguson concern is that even though Ronaldo had a great game this past Saturday, he doesn’t know if Ronaldo could play again at the top of his game on Tuesday. In any case, Ferguson will try to find the solution an hour before the game on Tuesday; he will wait and study how Ronaldo reacts on practice.

With no more to say, we all know the incredible kind of player that Cristiano Ronaldo is. We hope for him to receive these amazing awards and accomplish more in the future. He stills has a great future ahead of him and a lot to learn and we hope the best for this young and talented football player.

World Cup 2006 Preview – Holland

Outright Odds: 12/1
Group C Winners: 13/8

New coach Marco van Basten has proven to be a revelation off the pitch as much as he was on it since taking over the Dutch national team. Plucked from an obscure youth coaching role at Ajax where he kept his head down and had low responsibilities when Dick Advocaat quit after Euro 2004, van Basten has made this new-look Dutch team his own.

Out with the old and in with the new seems to be van Basten’s philosophy so while former well known favourites such as Clarence Seedorf and Patrick Kluivert have been given the chop, some of the best players the Dutch Eredivisie has to offer have come in to replace them.

Players such as AZ Alkmaar’s Denny Landzaat, Feyenoord’s Dirk Kuyt and Ajax’s Ryan Babel may not be household names yet but have all won the backing of the manager. Ajax have a strong representation in the squad, with John Heitinga, Nigel de Jong, Hedwiges Maduro and Wesley Sneijder, all under the age of 23, vying for a place in the starting line-up.

The faith shown in locally-based players along with more recognisable faces such as evergreen trio Edwin van der Sar, Edgar Davids and Philip Cocu and the likes of Arjen Robben and Ruud van Nistelrooy has paid off.

The team are showing true team spirit and togetherness, unlike the inconsistent squads of the past and in qualifying notched up 32 points, the highest of any European side. Holland finished five points clear at the top of their group that also included bogey side Czech Republic and Romania, both of whom they beat twice. Surprisingly, the only country they didn’t beat was Macedonia who they drew with twice.

Ruud van Nistelrooy was in scintillating form during qualifying with seven goals in 10 matches and now back in favour at Manchester United, could be a good investment for the top goalscorer market.

The Dutch are always one of the favourites for the tournament but never quite manage it. They have reached the final twice, the semi finals and quarter final stages but never have enough to win it outright.

The team entering this year have little World Cup experience and it would be a big ask of this team to go all the way in Germany.

BetBonus.co.uk Recommendation:
Holland offer better value to win Group C than Argentina but a lack of experience throughout the squad means they cannot be backed to win the tournament outright. Ruud van Nistelrooy could be a good each-way investment for the top goal scorer berth on his debut at the finals.

Holland to win Group C @ 13/8
E/W Ruud van Nistelrooy as top goalscorer @ 16/1

English Premier League – Liverpool One Point Away from Top Spot Manchester United

The current second place of the English Premier League and 18-times Premier League champions, Liverpool, defeated in a whipping victory of 5-0 to Aston Villa. This triumph places Liverpool just one point behind the current English Premier League champion, Manchester United, who lost in week 30 against Fulham 2-0. This defeat of Manchester United is their second consecutive loss as they were beaten by Liverpool 4-1 the week before.

It has to be mentioned that weeks ago Liverpool seemed almost an impossible contender to battle for the Premier League title, but after they defeated Real Madrid and Manchester United, 4-0 and 4-1 respectively with a complete change of game, the team was revived with confidence.

During the game against Aston Villa, Liverpool was handling the game extremely well and was energetic from the beginning through the end. The players were passing the ball in great way and opening the gaps to encounter great plays. Moreover, Liverpool’s defense was tough and Aston Villa was not able to pass through it.  By playing this great football, Liverpool opened the score in hands of Dirk Kuyt at minute 7 and then Albert Riera scored at minute 32. From then on, Gerrard took over by scoring three more goals; two from penalties at minute 39 and 65 respectively, and then the other one in a free kick at the edge of the area at minute 49. With this amount of goals, Aston Villa seemed defenceless and was unable to play their football.

With this astonishing win, Liverpool added a total of 64 points at second place ahead of Chelsea by three points and behind Manchester United, who is currently at the top just within one point with 65 points.

Having these last results, Liverpool is well-motivated and completely confident on their football and their players, and with eight games left in the Premier League, they’re willing to give everything they have in order to catch United and they will be playing each game as it was a cup final, as their coach Benitez told advised them. The Reds’ captain Steven Gerrard expressed that his team is just waiting for United to make mistakes and they will take advantage of it to jump the top spot. In the meantime, Liverpool will keep pressuring United and will focus on playing one game at the time. But they are not resting on their laurels for their current results, since they know United are capable of winning the remaining 8 games, so they have to remain very concentrated and hope for the best for the next weeks.

“I think it is important not to get carried away. They are capable of winning all their remaining games. It is important we focus on what we’re doing and keep winning, keep on their shoulders, keep piling that pressure on them and whilst they are going into games knowing we are ready to pounce on any mistakes that they make it will be more difficult for them,” expressed Gerrard.

The next game for Liverpool in the English Premier League will be against Fulham on April 4th after the two-week break for international fixtures. We hope for the battle for the Premier League to continue so we can keep enjoying the excitement of one of the elite football leagues in Europe.
