The Eagles have been, over the last ten or so years, a team that has demonstrated flashes of brilliance at times. With runs into the playoffs on numerous occasions, their fans have been given hope time and again, but repeatedly had those hopes dashed. In fact, above their 77 year history, the Eagles have repeatedly had periods in which they appeared ready to move onto the next level and compete for a Super Bowl, but never seem to get it done. Even when they have appeared within the game – once in 1980 and once more in 2004 – they’ve not been able to win it. For older Eagles fans, the true glory days of the franchise aren’t now, but occurred more than a half century ago during the coaching tenure of Earle Neale.Creating the DraftThe Eagles were very best known for losing prior to hiring Neale. The problem that they chiefly had was a single of building their new franchise from the bottom up. Their owner’s idea, presented to the NFL in 1935, was to change the game in methods that even he could not have envisioned. It was he who originated the famous Eagle Defense that was adopted by other franchises around the League. That defense now lives on in the modern 4-3 formation which is still popular these days. Neale’s championship years using the Eagles, along with his defensive innovations, helped him to earn a spot from the NFL Hall of Fame.

Since beginning my football coaching career I find it interesting to look at successful coaches from different sports.  What do these coaches do that seperate them from their peers?  It seems as though that no matter what sport you examine, either at the college or professional level, their is a smattering of coaches that are  constantly winning.  Beyond just success and winning games, these coaches have mastered something the rest of us coaches have yet to  to figure out and put into practice.  First, these coaches really study other successful people, for example leaders of the past and present .  They study how these individuals  have not only built their fortune , but preserve it.  The most successful business owners and coaches share the same goal of maintaining their success.  How do they move those under them to keep the desire  to be the best .  This becomes a bigger challenge for individuals who have been a part of a team that has been successful long before they joined the team.  A great example of this is in high school football .  De La Salle High School in California, which won a record 151 games in a row from 1992-2003 (wikipedia).  A winning streak that lasts more than 11 years takes a special type of leader to not only maintain the desire to be the best, but also the power to get the players to not feel “entitled” to win .  I will not pretend that I have figured out all the reasons that make people winners , but through my dad’s career as a leader in major athletics, to studying successful people I have found one phrase that sticks out to me.  In the words of  the great  Aretha Franklin, that one little secret is R-E-S-P-E-C-T! 

Coaches continuously compare the idea of building a team around that of building a house.  If that is the case then respect is the space that you will build your house.  If the ground is too soft, over time the foundation will split and the house will fall.  If the land has mounds of inconsistency it will also lead to a faulty foundation.  It is very important, especially for young leaders that they don’t interpret respect as being the same as “like”.  Too many coaches, teachers, and business leaders want to be “friends” with  those they lead, and in doing so, lose the respect they need because they are focused on making sure those they are in charge of are happy. 

Coaches, need not panic because it is possible to have your players respect you and like you at the same time.  Notice that I said they will like you, not be friends with you, there is a big difference .  It has been my experience that deep down players will go above and beyond for a coach that they feel will do anything for them.  Tell them and show them that you care.  What people like more than anything else in life is seeing results of their hard work.  If people are comfortable enough in their own skin to be hard on those they lead when needed and to always expect perfection, yet able to settle for slightly less, wins will come often.  Be sure to use tough love when needed and ALWAYS compliment the person when they do good.  Coaches must continuously be working to earn the respect of those they coach.  It is important that they continue working to get to know their players and other coaches .  In addition, they must find ways to keep a finger on what their players need for them to be successful.  The more out of touch someone gets with those they lead the more important it becomes that they keep up with those they are commanding .  Maintaining respect from those they lead and those they work with will lead to winning games year after year .
